CHAPTER 4

When I woke up the next morning, my entire body ached. I groaned, rolling over onto my side, confused at first as to why my bed felt so hard and lumpen. But as my thoughts reassembled, I remembered where I was.

I sat straight up, my heart racing. I was still naked, although I was no longer shivering with cold. The steam vents had done their job, and if anything I felt almost uncomfortably warm, even with the damp chill blowing off the waves.

I was alone.

“Drar?” I called out, twisting out toward the sea. I stopped, startled by a flash of brightness in the black volcanic sand.

My surfboard.

It had been dragged in front of the water and weighed down with three black stones. My body suit was stretched out beside it, also pinned down by rocks. Those rocks were the only evidence that I hadn’t hallucinated all that had happened last night, that I hadn’t just washed onto this beach with my surfboard and stripped naked in a pique of near-drowning-related insanity.

I pushed myself up to standing, my muscles aching. I wasn’t sure if it was because I had been battered so thoroughly by the waves, or because I had spent the night sleeping on rocks, or because—

Because of last night’s activities.

I could still feel the impressions of them, too. A pleasant ache between my legs, a sense memory of a long black tongue.

“Drar?” I called out, my voice plaintive on the whistling wind of the beach. Speaking made me realize how thirsty I was, my throat dry as sand, the taste of salt still on my lips.

For the first time, fear quivered through me. Would Drar understand that I needed fresh water? Could I even get fresh water here? Last night he had told me this was an island, and I wondered suddenly how far from the mainland I was. How I would get home.

“Hello?” I shouted, trying to keep the panic out of my voice. “Drar, are you here?”

I skittered down to my surfboard, gasping as I left the ambient heat of the steam vents, and snatched up my body suit. The tide was out, and the black sand shone silver in the sunlight, reminding me of the water the night before. Reminding me of Drar’s skin.

I dressed quickly, tugging on the dry body suit to trap my warmth. Then I looked around, trying to take stock of my situation. I still had no idea how I was going to get off this island. Especially since Drar had apparently abandoned me.

I tried not to feel a sting of regret at the thought. I’m not sure what I expected. He told me he was some kind of ancient underwater demigod, so it’s not like we could exactly have a relationship. But he was kind, and he had saved my life, and that was more than I could say for most of the guys I’d dated.

That he had two dicks was definitely a plus, too.

My stomach grumbled although that was less concerning to me than the dryness in my mouth.
